Homework Due Today:

Read “Politics, Culture, and the Public Sphere” (posted on the “Resources” page of the course website);

Create a wix.com website (need a home page and a bio or "about me" page) and email me the link (view chapters 2-7 of the How to Use the Wix Editor videos (access through “Video Tutorials” under the “Help” menu of your website);

Email me your intro letter (instructions posted on the "Workspace" page).

Week 3: Digital Ethos

Studio: Building a Webpage & Web Design Concepts

            Homework Due Today:

            Read “(excerpt from) Radio: An Illustrated Guide” (pgs 14-43 in Out on the Wire);

 Final Website: it should now contain at least three images (and image credits) and the following pages: Home (including your  name, course title, and a brief explanation of the purpose of the website), About (including a picture of you and a bio), Audio  Essay (this page will be empty), and Workspace. All "extraneous" template information should be deleted.

                         

Thursday, September 15  

Discuss: Responsibilities and Rewards of Authentic Storytelling

Studio: Introduction to Audio Recording and Editing (from now on, bring ear buds to all classes)

            Homework Due Today:

                       Read Chapter 1, “Amuse Yourself: Ideas,” in Out on the Wire;

 Post your “I Am From” poem on your website. Instructions posted under "Resouces." Create a page titled "I am From" under    the “Audio Essay” menu to house poem)

                         

 

Week 4: Developing a Project, the Rhetoricity of Sound

Monday, September 19  

Discuss: Audio Projects, Copyright & Creative Commons

Studio: Audacity

Homework Due Today (Please bring your earbuds to class today, and to each class from now on):

Read Chapter 2, “The Heat of Their Breath: Character & Voice,” in Out on a Wire;

Download Audacity and the LAME MP3 Encoder;

View Chapter 1, “Getting Started” & Chapter 2, “Recording,” in the Up and Running with Audacity Lynda.com video tutorials;

Write script for your audio biography and record at least 2-3 minutes (bring on laptop and save on your flash drive);

Read "Background" pages (Timeline, International Legal Framework, Who is--and isn't--a refugee, The Asylum Process) on the Refugees Deeply site and write a 1-paragraph summary that you post on a "Research" page

Discuss: Copyright and Creative Commons

Studio: Audio Recording & Editing, continued  

Homework Due Today:

Audio Bio Draft 1 due (create a page called "Audio Bio Draft 1" under the "Audio Bio" tab on your main menu:  embed your draft there and bring it saved on your flash drive). Draft 1 should include the full narrative script and at least some sonic elements (music, sound effects, etc.) Note: in order to embed your Audio Bio draft on your website you will need to create a Soundcloud account and upload your mp3 file there, then add a Soundcloud player to your page, and copy the "embed" code from Soundcloud into the player);

View Chapter 3, “Basic Editing” in the Up and Running with Audacity Lynda.com video tutorials;

Read "Quick Facts from Mercy Corps: What You Need to Know About the Syria Crisis" and write a one-paragraph summary that you post on your Research page.
